Withdrawal symptoms as a cause of relapse
Research over the past two decades has established a neurological basis for cannabis withdrawal symptoms that relates to the regulation of endocannabinoids taking place in the central nervous system. These withdrawal symptoms and their severity are very similar to those experienced when quitting smoking, although sleep disturbances appear more pronounced for cannabis and the urge to smoke seems greater for tobacco. A study conducted in 2008, on a sample of nearly 500 smokers (aged between 18 and 64), more than half of whom had smoked at least 2,000 times, showed that more than 40% of these smokers had experienced one of the withdrawal symptoms (or more) at the time of withdrawal. The most commonly cited symptoms are cravings, irritability, boredom, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. About a third of people admitted to having started smoking again to relieve or avoid these effects.

Cannabis, memory and intelligence
A study published in 2012 shows that heavy cannabis use early in adolescence could permanently reduce certain intellectual faculties. Impairment of short-term memory, working memory, and attention up to several weeks after stopping use has also been demonstrated.
